Dates for YAA squads 2009-2010

Kath Fitzpatrick - 20 August 2010

Below are the dates for the YAA squads for 2010-11. In response to last year's feedback we have increased each squad's meeting days to 4 over the winter period.

There are two forms for squad applications - one is simply a returns form for last year's archers to indicate they wish to continue; one is a new applicant form. If you are a new applicant and have already sent in an application on last year's form you do not need to reapply.

All of the squads meet at Barnsley AC's indoor venue at Holgate Sports College, Shaw Lane, Barnsley and sessions are from 10:00 AM till 4:00 PM. Archers need to bring their lunch and a shooting line chair. It's not essential to wear GNAS dress but we do encourage club colours to be worn.

Training in business essentials for coaches, administrators and managers

19 August 2010

GBSport, an independent sports consultancy, is running four-hour training courses in business essentials for sports coaches, administrators and managers. While the YAA does not normally promote such commercial ventures, and we make no recommendation either way, we think many YAA members will be very interested in what these courses offer.

Courses are taking place all over the country - the document linked below gives all the dates and venues.
Details, dates and venues for GBSport Business Essentials courses

GBSport is running four-hour BUSINESS ESSENTIALS training courses for sports coaches, administrators and managers between September and December at venues throughout Britain, several in your area.

Your local courses are:
LEEDS - Tuesday 7th September 10am-2pm at South Leeds Golf Club
HULL - Tuesday 21st September 10am-2pm at Hull YPI Tennis Club
SHEFFIELD - Wednesday 22nd September 10am-2pm at Hillsborough Sports Arena

The course is a four hour guide on the key business and taxation issues that affect those coaching and administering a sports coaching programme/business, with particular emphasis on the following areas:

SELF-EMPLOYMENT STATUS - There are strict rules and regulations that must be met for a sports coach to be accepted as self-employed (as opposed to employed) by the taxman and there are serious financial consequences for both the coach and the organisation/person engaging the services of the coach should the taxman later declare them to be employed. The course details the key areas that the coach and client must address - substitution, control of the programme and financial risk - to ensure the coaches in a programme qualify as self-employed in the eyes of the taxman.

TAKING ON STAFF - The course outlines the issues relating to taking on coaches to expand a coaching programme, including employment status, insurance considerations, protection against the poaching of clients and child protection issues. We detail the various types of flexible employment contract available including zero hour contracts which are becoming increasingly popular as a means of engaging the services of sports coaches. We detail just what is involved in employing staff, including a detailed look at the administration required to run a PAYE system and employment rights.

CONTRACTS - The course details the key clauses needed to protect both coach and client and provide sample contracts for use with both self-employed and employed staff in a coaching programme.

INSURANCE - The course details the insurance cover that both coach and client must and should have in place to meet their legal and health and safety obligations.

VAT - The VAT regulations relating to delivery of coaching lessons are complex and the penalties for getting this wrong can be severe, particularly for the client/club. Level of turnover, employment status, the type of coaching - all of these are factors in whether VAT should be charged. This course details the rules and regulations and works through practical examples. It also details how to minimise the VAT bill if VAT has to be applied and how to best introduce any necessary increase in fees to customers.

All delegates attending the course receive a hard copy of the GBSport Running a Successful Coaching Programme handbook which includes a CD-ROM containing essential forms, guides and free software. We believe that this course is currently the only training of its type available for coaches and administrators and that it will provide them with vital information to ensure that they are operating legally and safely and thereby play an important part in professionalising the services they provide.

The course costs just £40 per person and has already been assessed and declared to be an approved training course by a number of sport national governing bodies and sports partnerships.

GBSport is an independent sports consultancy that works with sporting organisations and coaches/administrators in Britain to provide expert business and IT support services and training. You can find out more about the services we provide by visiting our web site at www.gbsport.org.uk.

 YAA Coaching website

Tom Musgrove awarded the Jack Flinton Helping Hand trophy

November 2008

Tom Musgrove was presented with the Jack Flinton Helping Hand Award at the National Coaching Conference, which took place from the 7th to the 9th of November 2008. The award of this annual trophy to Tom was announced at this year's Archery GB AGM following nomination by the Yorkshire Archery Association.

Tom's archery career began in 1954 with Harvester Archers in Doncaster. In 1956 he started to coach and rapidly progressed to a Regional and then National (now known as Senior) coach.

Tom has worked within the sport as a coach education tutor in Yorkshire and the East Midlands and as a coach, most notably working with the National Youth Squad. Tom is also largely responsible for the development of the Archery GB Leaders coaching award. In the early 1990s he was the first person to complete the Sports Coaching degree from the National Coaching Foundation (now sports coach UK).

Tom continues to work with archers of all standards from beginner to international level, and also happens to be a national table tennis coach! Kath Fitzpatrick, Archery GB Senior Coach and Northern Counties Regional Coaching Organiser said "I don't believe you could find anyone more committed to archery coaching than Tom - he still has a great enthusiasm for coaching and a thirst for learning to this day, he is a truly inspirational and a worthy recipient of this award".

Shooting Forward

Kath Fitzpatrick - 18 August 2008

Archery GB (which some do call The GNAS) has launched a coaching newsletter, Shooting Forward. For more details and to subscribe, go to the page below:
 GNAS coaching page
Below is some information taken from the newsletter.

Shooting Forward is Archery GB's first online coaching magazine bringing you the latest news, coaching guidance and grass roots reporting. Within each edition of Shooting Forward you can expect to find regular features including C.A.S.E and Coaching Stars (see below) and club and coach development updates, in addition to the latest news and interesting interviews.

C.A.S.E

We believe that all coaches have a responsibility to share their coaching, ideas, techniques and methods with other coaches, and to seek better practice for themselves. In this vein, we introduce the 'Copy And Steal Everything' - CASE - guide to coaching!

To start with you copy and steal all the best coaching ideas that you can find. Then you share them with your coaching colleagues. Simple, and together we will improve our coaching skills!

Coaching Stars

It might be what they focus on or how they coach that makes the learning journey so dynamic and here's your chance to nominate your inspiring coach to be showcased in our regular feature 'Coaching Stars'. E-mail Hannah Bussey your 'Coaching Star' nomination along with the following information:

  • Your nominated Coaching Stars' name, club, contact details and a photograph (jpeg format).
  • A profile of who they coach and what makes their coaching so special.
  • Your name and the name of anyone else who your nomination is on behalf of.
We'll contact the winning Coaching Star for a brief interview and inclusion in the next edition of Shooting Forward. Each featured Coaching Star will win an Archery GB key ring - what a bonus!
