Spring-Summer 2015

Bill Spencer

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Bill Spencer died on Sunday the 25th of January 2015. He was at home with his family recovering from a recent operation.

He was a great friend, coach and mentor who devoted most of his spare time to archery, bringing many new people into the sport.

He will be sadly missed by all of us and our thoughts are with Carol at this difficult time.

Amy Oliver receives the Award of Merit

At the 2015 YAA Indoor Championships Amy Oliver was presented with the Award of Merit. Andrew Neal, YAA President, presented her with the county's highest award.

Citation
As the award of merit is to recognise exemplary service to archery I can think of no better person to receive this for her hard work, determination and achievements.
Amy had her first archery lesson at 7 years old but it wasn't until she was 16 that she started competitive shooting. As a junior she represented Yorkshire and in 2006 was selected to shoot for GB at the World Field Championships in Sweden, where she came 13th shooting a personal best. It was while watching her team mate Naomi Folkard winning individual bronze at that competition that Amy boldly said "I'm going to be in the finals next year" and true to her word was the first woman in 20 years to win an individual gold medal at the 2007 European field championships in Croatia. Since then she has never looked back with both individual and team awards. To name a few major achievements:
2007 European Field Championships Team Silver
2010 World Championships - Mixed Team Bronze
2011 Commonwealth Games - Team Silver
 2012 Olympic Games
 2013/2014 National Series Winner
Not only is Amy a great archer but also a role model and ambassador for Archery and Yorkshire Archery and deserves the highest award that can be given to acknowledge this through Yorkshire Archery.

Viv Oxley receives the Yorkshire Award

Viv Oxley was presented with the Yorkshire Award at the 2015 YAA Indoor Championships. Andrew Neal, YAA President, made the presentation.

Citation
Viv is a key member of the Greenman Club having been one of the founding members, starting the club in 2006.
She has held every organizational position within the club from secretary to treasurer to webmaster, often performing more than one duty at a time.
She is instrumental in the organization of two Yorkshire competitions a year, one being the Double FITA alongside Barnsley Archers, and the popular Yorkshire Pudding Shoot. Viv has run the beginners courses every year since the club began and always makes time to help and support members of the club in their development. She will go down to the club purely to aid others in their technique and is a fantastic resource for both the recurve archers and compound, and is even able to assist the bare bows!
She also supports the fundraising activities for the club and will give up weekends to run have-a-go shoots. Alongside all this she is still able to find time to achieve Master Bowman and County selection.
As a club we are very proud of all that she has achieved and how selfless she is towards the club, and would love for her to receive recognition of our appreciation.

Yorkshire archers at the selection shoot

Yorkshire archers did well at the April selection shoot at Lilleshall.

Amy Oliver finished second in the Women's Recurve category. This earned her a place at the first leg of the Archery World Cup in Shanghai. She'll be part of the Women's Recurve team alongside Naomi Folkard and Nicky Hunt. Amy had already been selected for the European Games, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from the 12th to the 28th of June 2015. The archery competition runs from the 16th to the 22nd of June.

Danielle Brown finished second to Naomi Jones, ahead of an epic battle for third between Andrea Gales and Lucy O'Sullivan.

Joe Fairburn was fifth in the Gents Cadet Recurve category.

Adam and Izzy Carpenter each finished second in their Cadet Compound categories.

And Louise Smith and Mark Hayes were judging!

Congratulations to them all.

Barnsley AC Early Bird 2015 - funds raised

On behalf of Barnsley Archery Club I would like to thank all archers for supporting the event despite the challenging weather conditions!

This charity shoot has a great significance to many of us and I am delighted to say that due to your generosity a total of 252 will be shared equally between Cancer Research and MacMillan Cancer Support.

Thanks also to Les at Aardvark Archery for sponsoring the target faces.

Finally, many thanks to our Lady P Michelle and our wonderful judges Mark and Martin who helped the day run so smoothly.

We look forward to welcoming you back next year!

Results of the YAA Clout Championships 2015

The 2015 Yorkshire Archery Association Clout Championships took place on Sunday 19th April at Hutton Cranswick, Driffield, the home of Archers of East Riding - who were excellent hosts again. The weather on the day was dry and clear with a cold breeze at the archers' backs. There were 96 entrants shooting in all classes and nineteen tassel awards claimed on the day.

Christine Heap was Lady Paramount with Gareth Beeby, Stephen Howard and Richard Ford judging. The raffle and prize giving took place in the clubhouse once shooting had finished.

I would like to thank Cranswick Sports Association for the use of their facilities; the members of Archers of East Riding for their assistance in setting the field up, providing excellent catering and for being very welcoming; also Christine, Gareth, Stephen and Richard for carrying out their duties so well.

Congratulations to the winners. I hope to see you at next years shoot which will take place on Sunday 17th April 2016.

New Judge Training Programme

Being a Judge is a fantastic way to be involved in archery. We are now recruiting young people (16-25) onto our new judge training programme to be part of the Judging team at the UK's biggest tournaments in 2015.

We are also providing bursaries of 200 to support young judges with the travel costs involved in attending tournaments within the programme. For more information, watch our new Judge video and if you're interested get your application form in as soon as possible.

Barnsley Early Bird 2015

Chilly fun in the sun was had at the Barnsley Early Bird shoot on the 1st of March. Marina Rose celebrated her birthday by working in the kitchen, though she was presented with a lovely cake. Your humble editor barely escaped with his life after doing the Lady P, Michelle Kiddy, out of the Best Gold award. The shoot raised 252 for cancer charities.

Phoenix Floodlit 2015

The Phoenix Bowmen of Halifax held their character-forming Floodlit Pie & Peas National on the 19th of April. Rain chucked down all day until a few minutes before the start of the shoot, after which all was fine. The steak pie and peas were especially fine.

Bronte Spring 2015

Bronte Archers held their Spring Weekend shoot over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. Sunday was grim in the morning but brightened up. Monday brought ideal archery weather. The photos below were taken on the Monday, obvs.

New YAA timing system available to clubs

A reminder that the YAA's new Danage timing system is available to YAA clubs for use at their own FITA shoots.

The system combines timer, lights, sound, scoreboard, archer rotation indicators and control panels. It's so energy efficient that the whole system can run for a two-day shoot using two car batteries.

Instructions for the use of the system are available from the Judging page:

Please contact Karen Winsett if you are interested in using this system at your club's open shoot.

The Yorkshire Award

THE YORKSHIRE AWARD is a prestigious award where clubs can nominate individuals or couples who, in the eyes of their club, deserve recognition for services to that particular club.

There is no set deadline for submission of nominations.

If you think someone in your club deserves such recognition, please download the nomination form from the website, complete it, and send it to the county secretary.

Judges expenses form

The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges.

The tournament organiser or club secretary should send the form to the judge well in advance of the event. The judge should return the confirmation of attendance and expected expenses, so matters can be settled in advance of the event.

To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a tear off slip to send to Karen Winsett, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:

Judges confirmation and expense form (Word format)

Alternatively, write to the County Secretary or phone him for a copy.

If you want particular judges, please write their names on the slip that is to be sent to Karen.

Many thanks for your anticipated support.
