Newsletter

Summer '07

Apologies for the lack of a Spring Newsletter.

This was mainly due to me having a format in my mind and not being able to find the right software to create it.

Mick Fitzpatrick, editor

New YAA website

The Yorkshire Archery Association has a new website. Launched on the 26th of August 2006, it replaces the old website which had been out of action for about 18 months.

The website can be found at:

 http://www.yorkshirearchery.co.uk/

I developed the website with a great deal of help from Kath and Mick Fitzpatrick, Nick Beeson, Martin Holtby, Dave Phillips and Andrew Neal, as well as Tony George of the NCAS. At present it offers a lot of useful information, but it will grow to offer much more. We intend to add more content, especially to the coaching, juniors and judging sections.

The website is your resource. If you have any news, requests for assistance, an upcoming event, want to publicise your beginners course or provide contact details for your club, please email me at yaa@phoenixbowmen.co.uk or phone me on 07986 185882. I'll be more than happy to add your information to the website.

Tim Mason Awarded The Yorkshire Sword

At the YAA Outdoor Championships Tim Mason was awarded The Yorkshire Sword by Lady Paramount for the day Susan Heritage.

Below is the citation received from Dave Phillips nominating Tim as a recipient of The Yorkshire Sword.

I wish to nominate Tim Mason of Phoenix Bowmen for the award of the Yorkshire Sword for 2006. Tim was responsible for launching, in its current format, the YAA Internet site during 2006 and for maintaining the site since the re-launch.

The YAA Committee had been working for a number of years to resolve the issue of the lack of this resource, since the withdrawal of the original site. It was seen as a major information source which was not available to our archers and to those who wished to join us or find out more about us.

Tim offered his services at the 2006 AGM, and it was only a matter of weeks before Tim had a draft version of the site available and this was quickly followed by a fully operational site, which can be seen today.

Tim has been aware of information which would be useful to his fellow archers and has been quick to include this in updates to the site. He is also quick to load up any new information sent to him from officers of the association and interested contributors.

The information available and delivered by the site has been a valuable tool in promoting archery in Yorkshire. Archers, clubs and the public can now readily and easily access useful information about the Association, it’s events, entry forms, nomination forms and general archery information.

Tim has done a great job in producing and maintaining the YAA website and should be considered for the award of the Yorkshire Sword for 2006.

Yorkshire Sword Nominations for 2007

I would like to remind all clubs of the opportunity to nominate someone to receive the Yorkshire Sword for the year 2007. The nomination forms will be sent out to all clubs in September, as well as being posted on the YAA Website at about the same time. The criteria remains as in previous years, and is detailed on the nomination form. The nominations should be received by Dave Phillips, YAA Secretary no later than 31st December 2007. The presentation of the Sword is made to recognise a Yorkshire Archer, who in the opinion of the YAA clubs has made the greatest service to archery in Yorkshire in the previous year (2007).

Dearne Valley ladies triumph at Pentref

Amy Oliver of Dearne Valley Archery Club has become British Ladies Recurve Field Champion. Her aunt Michelle Kiddy was runner-up, a reversal of last year when Michelle won and Amy finished second. The All-British Field Championships were held at Pentref, South Wales, on the 26th and 27th of May 2007.

Amy is keeping up a distinguished family tradition. Her grandmother Joyce Kiddy, mother Lynda Oliver (nee Kiddy) and aunt Michelle Kiddy have all won this trophy. The trophy has spent a total of 15 years in the family.

Michelle's performance has earned her a place on the Great Britain team, alongside Amy.

Congratulations to both!

New Public Relations Officer

At the 57th AGM, Susan Heritage stepped down as the YAA's Public Relations Officer. We would like to thank her for her many years of service in this role. She remains a member of the general committee.

Somewhat to my own surprise, I've been elected to this office. I'm already responsible for the YAA's website, so was in a good position to take on responsibility for the flow of information about archery in Yorkshire.

The remit of the PRO is quite broad - too broad for one person. Thankfully, offers of help have already been received from several people. In particular, Mick Fitzpatrick is taking over the newsletter. I'm actively looking for other victims to involve. I welcome contact from any Yorkshire archers with experience of public relations or journalism.

I'd like to receive information from clubs about upcoming events, reports and results of shoots, personal achievements by members, photos etc. In return, I intend to provide news and information to YAA members, the wider archery community and the big wide world outside archery.

Please feel free to contact me:

Yorkshire Archers at the World Indoor Championships

Matthew Arnold of the Bowmen of Adel and Linda Garner of Bronte Archers competed in the World Indoor Championships in Izmir, Turkey. These took place in March 2007.

Matthew shot well enough in the qualifying round to give himself a bye in the 1/16 elimination. The last 16 saw him against fellow Brit Tapani Kalmaru. Matthew shot a strong 112 dozen but unfortunately Tapani managed a 115. This put Matthew out of the competition but I'm sure he will be pleased with his performance and he can now say he came 13th at the Junior World Indoor Championships.

Linda Garner was ranked 25th after the qualifying round. This meant she was straight in at the deep end and would face the number 7 seed Sofia Goncharova of Russia. Linda shot a 115 dozen and took Sofia out as she was only able to muster a 114 in reply. This meant Linda was also into the last 16 and up against Ivana Buden from Croatia. This time it was Ivana who shot the 115, Linda could only find the 'X ring' twice to give her a 110. Overall this has placed Linda 16th at the World Indoor Championships.

A good performance by both, and our congratulations to them.

YAA 2007 Indoor Championships

The YAA Senior and Junior Indoor Championships 2007 took place at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield on Sunday the 11th of March.

It was a shame to be indoors when the weather was so good, but 157 Yorkshire archers and one visitor made the sacrifice. The round was a Portsmouth, with half the archers shooting in the morning and half in the afternoon. A good standard of shooting was seen.

Dave Phillips handed out certificates for records achieved in the previous 12 months - congratulations to all recipients.

Many thanks to Wakefield Archers for hosting the tournament and to Andrew Neal for organising it.

YAA 2007 Clout Championships

The YAA Senior and Junior Clout Championships 2007 took place at Ebor Archers in York on Sunday 22nd April. The shoot was well attended and saw a high standard of competition, with four new national records and several Yorkshire records being set. We also had a welcome visit from the BBC's Look North programme - the edition broadcast on the 23rd of April had a substantial feature on the tournament.

The full set of results is included with this newsletter. Many thanks to Ebor Archers for hosting the event. Photos and Results are available on the YAA Website

2007 YAA Open Single FITA Star and YAA Championships

The YAA’s Open Single FITA took place on Saturday the 2nd of June, followed by the YAA Senior and Junior Open Championships on Sunday the 3rd of June.

The venue was Grange Park in Wetherby. The weather was very pleasant, with a light breeze that proved trickier than it seemed.

The shoot enjoyed its highest number of entries for a long time, with 140 archers entering the FITA Star and 171 entering the Championships.

The standard of shooting was good, with five claims for six-gold ends and 27 claims for Rose awards.

2007 YAA Double FITA Star

The NCAS/YAA Double FITA was held on the weekend of the 30th of June and the 1st of July at Grange Park in Wetherby.

The weather was the main topic of conversation for the weekend. Saturday was drizzly and windy, but we soldiered on and completed the round. The drinks and butties provided by the catering crew kept us going. Sunday was frequently interrupted by stoppages for lightning and torrential downpours. It got so bad that a vote was taken before the final end of the ninth dozen and most archers voted to abandon the round. Not surprisingly, most peoples' scores were held down by the conditions, especially on Sunday. Despite that, six claims were made for FITA stars, including two for 1300 stars.

2007 YAA Field Championships at risk

At present (13 July 2007) no date or venue has been arranged for the 2007 Field Championships.

Contact has been made with a number of clubs, but as yet we have not had any offers to host the Championships this year. Unless a club steps forward in the next few weeks to host the 2007 Championships, the Committee will be left with no alternative other than to cancel the event for 2007.

If this is sadly the final position, the Committee and Field Officer will do all they can to ensure the Championships take place in 2008.

If any club is interested in hosting the shoot in 2007 or 2008, please make the YAA Secretary or any member of the Committee aware of your interest.

Team Trophies Awarded to Yorkshire

Teams at Regional and National Tournaments

The Yorkshire Committee have agreed that, where requested, the County will in future pay for the engraving of any Trophies awarded to the Yorkshire Team at any Regional or National Tournaments. This offer does not extend to the engraving of "individually" won trophies.

Requests for re-payment should be made to the County Treasurer, accompanied by the engraving receipt.

Judges Confirmation and Expense Form

For the attention of all YAA Club Secretaries and Tournament Organisers:

The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges, who have had to approach tournament organisers to seek re-imbursement for their various expenses, almost feeling that they have had to negotiate the matter or value of their expenses for the day. They have also not been sure of the arrangements being provided (or not provided) by the club for the judge’s lunch.

The approach we’re recommending is for the tournament organiser or club secretary to send the form to the judge well in advance of the event, and for the judge to return the confirmation of their attendance and expected expenses, such that these matters can be settled well before the day.

If you are responsible for organising such a tournament we would request that these forms are used this year and we will evaluate the success or otherwise at the end of the season.

Many thanks for your anticipated support.

The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:

 http://www.yorkshirearchery.co.uk/Documents/JudgeConfExp.doc

Alternatively, write to me or phone me for a copy.
